Across England, access to physical activity opportunities is not a level playing field and certain places and communities experience increased barriers to being more physically active.
Working in a place-based approach puts the community at the heart of it. Lots of local organisations and key community members working together to empower local residents to create the outcomes and opportunities they want to see in their area.
Importantly this approach works to identify the great things that already exist in each place, and works to improve access, knowledge and investment, always working alongside the community to share their voices and co-design behaviour changing support for fellow residents.
In November 2023, as part of the Uniting the Movement strategy, Sport England announced a £250 million investment of National Lottery and Exchequer funding into areas of the country with the greatest need, to tackle inactivity.
The Local Authority area of Southampton and the area of Landport and Buckland in Portsmouth were identified for some of this investment.
Take a look at the work so far in Southampton, and in Landport and Buckland to find out more.
