A popular community initiative helping to boost social connectedness and keep people active in Southampton is continuing to thrive thanks to an ongoing partnership and support from charity volunteers (June 2026).
The bowls sessions – a joint Communicare, Atherley Bowling Club and Unpaid Carers initiative – launched last year as a funded, monthly activity, bringing people together on the last Thursday of each month.
Each session saw attendees – many supported to attend by us – come together to enjoy a light snack, try their hand at bowls under the guidance of the club’s volunteers, and finish with a sociable afternoon tea.
Annie Clewlow, Communicare's Manager
Although the initial funding ended in October 2025, Atherley Bowling Club has continued to run the sessions, ensuring they remain accessible to the community.
Participants of all ages can now attend for a £2 pay-as-you-go fee, which includes a cup of tea or coffee, or they can take advantage of low-cost membership, offering free bowling and refreshments, during the last Thursday of the month sessions, as well as access to the club at other times.
Annie adds: “We’re incredibly proud of the role this partnership has played in bringing people together. The continuation of these sessions by Atherley Bowling Club shows the real value they bring to the community. Initiatives like this are vital in helping people build friendships, stay active and feel part of something, particularly for those who may otherwise feel isolated. The sessions are providing an important space for social connection, physical activity and community spirit.”
Bowls is a great way to stay mobile and active, whatever your age or ability.
Lindsey Fraser, Volunteer befriender
Volunteer befriender Lindsey Fraser, an Olympian and former British Diving Team Leader and Coach, has been a regular presence at the sessions, encouraging participants to get involved.
She recently brought along her great nephews during a half-term visit, giving them the chance to experience bowls for the first time.
She says: “It’s been wonderful to see how much people gain from these sessions. They are fantastic for socialisation and really help to boost social connectedness while reducing isolation.
“At the same time, bowls is a great way to stay mobile and active, whatever your age or ability. Bringing my great nephews along showed just how quickly anyone can pick it up – they absolutely loved it.”
Communicare, a friendly neighbourhood charity, provides services that enrich the lives of isolated people in and around Southampton, supported by its dedicated volunteers, known as Communiteers.
The bowls sessions are open to anyone interested in a fun and inclusive activity, regardless of experience.
Sessions take place at Atherley Bowls & Social Club, Hill Lane, Southampton, SO15 5DB, on the last Thursdays of the month from 1pm to 3pm.
Annie says: “Join us for a relaxed, friendly afternoon of bowls, conversation and community.”
