This Girl Can Secondary School Champions

We’re helping secondary school girls to create positive change in their schools.

Girls aged 11-18 years old exercise less than boys. Fear of judgement is putting their physical and mental health at risk. This can limit their potential and ability to engage in school. So we’re on a mission to help girls grow in confidence and create a culture that encourages them to be active.

Girls’ health and wellbeing is deteriorating. Unless we take action now, these negative issues will have a significant impact on them and the women they will become.

This Girl Can Secondary School events

We’re running a series of free events for schools. Each one will focus on empowerment, health and well-being. Girls will explore what physical activity could look like in their schools. And we’ll help them gain the confidence and skills to create change.

Back at school, teachers will support them to make changes and encourage their friends to be active too.

The events are inspired by Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign.

I wish we could do more "boy" sports e.g. rugby and football.

Who are the events for?

This Girl Can Hampshire Secondary School events are for:

  • Female pupils (years 8-10) who aren’t engaged in lessons or physical activity
  • Girls (years 8-10) who have the potential to positively create change
  • Accompanying teachers/year heads/PSHE teachers/form tutors who have the influence to support change within their school

Schools can bring between 6-10 female pupils and up to 2 accompanying staff members.

What will they involve?

The events will involve:

  • interactive workshops to empower and support students to create positive change in their school
  • a choice of practical workshops including Clubbercise, Boxercise and Hula Hooping
  • insight sessions (for accompanying staff) focusing on the role of physical activity in increasing focus and attainment
  • screenings of This Girl Can videos to inspire pupils to rethink physical activity

What will pupils gain?

Pupils will gain a:

  • stronger awareness of their own self-esteem and confidence levels
  • sense of empowerment to create positive change in their school – particularly around physical activity and health and well-being
  • deeper understanding of what physical activity is and the opportunities that may be available to them

The teachers' workshop was very helpful at looking at how we can support girls with low levels of participation.
