Getting Active Outdoors

Being active outdoors can benefit both your mental and physical health. Reconnecting with nature, spending time with loved ones or learning new skills are just a few of the things the outdoors have to offer.

Hampshire offers a wide range of activity for everyone regardless of experience, ability, background or budget. Whether you enjoying getting active alone or in a group, there’s plenty to choose from. So, let’s explore what’s just beyond your doorstep…

It’s a perfect way to unplug and de-stress from the demands of the modern world.

Why Try Outdoor Activities?

The best thing about the outdoors? It’s right on your doorstep! But that’s not the only thing. Being active outdoors can:

  • Reduce stress and improve your mood
  • Help you sleep better and feel more energised
  • Strengthen your muscles and joints
  • Bring people together

Taking The First Step

Some activities can seem quite daunting. But the first step is always to try something you’re comfortable with.

  1. Start small – Try a gentle 5-minute walk from your front door. You can always turn back if you need to. The goal is consistency, not distance.
  2. Add movement to something you already do – Walk while talking on the phone, get off the bus one stop early or stretch in the garden after putting the bin out.
  3. Make it social – Invite a friend, family member or neighbour to join you.
  4. Plan for your comfort – Wear whatever feels comfortable, choose flat, familiar routes, bring water and check the weather.
  5. Celebrate every step – Progress isn’t about distance or speed. It’s about doing a little more than you did yesterday. That’s worth celebrating. So share your good news with us so we can celebrate you too!

You don't need to be an expert to get enjoyment from the outdoors. Whether it’s walking, cycling, paddling, swimming or climbing - you just have to be willing to give them a go!

Where To Start

Hampshire is packed with free and low-cost outdoor opportunities for all ages and abilities. Whether you prefer gentle movement or a bit more adventure, there’s something nearby to help you get going.

You could try:

  • Walking – Around the block, to the shop, or with a local walking group
  • Gardening – Even five minutes of digging, planting or watering counts
  • Seated stretches – In your garden, on a park bench, or by an open window
  • Outdoor games with kids or grandkids – Think bubbles, chalk, or ball games
  • Park visits – Sit, stroll, or explore at your local green spaces at your own pace

If you’re looking for something a little more wild (like outdoor swimming), there are also plenty of local groups to join. Why not try our local activity finder to see what’s happening near you.

Being Outdoors in Every Season

Outdoor movement can fit into your life all year round, whatever the weather! Here’s how to make the most of every season:

Spring

Blossom floats on the breeze, birdsong returns, and the world begins to wake up. It’s the perfect time to stretch your legs and enjoy the lighter days. Try…

  • Taking a walk and spot signs of new life (buds, birds, blossom)
  • A local nature trail or canal path
  • A stroll after dinner

Summer

Warm air hums with energy, grass between your toes, and sunlight lingers late into the evening. Make the most of the long days with outdoor activities like…

  • Pack a picnic and walk to your local park or green space
  • Paddle, dip your feet, or try outdoor swimming (safely!)
  • Try early morning or evening walks to stay cool

Autumn

Leaves falling like raindrops, a chill in the air, and the scent of woodsmoke in the breeze. Pull on a cosy jumper and head outside to…

  • Kick through leaves on a woodland walk
  • Collect pinecones or conkers with the children
  • Take photos of autumn colours as a mindful activity

Winter

Crisp mornings, breath visible in the air, and a peaceful stillness to the world. Even in the colder months, a little fresh air can lift your mood. Try…

  • Wrapping up warm and walking short distances
  • A “sunlight break” at lunch time for a mental boost
  • Follow a festive trail or light walk
