Build physical activity into health conversations.
Date: 1 July 2025 Author: Energise Me
Join us in welcoming Dr Rebecca Gould into a brand-new role - Physical Activity Clinical Champion (PACC) for Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
In her role Rebecca will be providing training and forming networks to upskill and support you to make physical activity a consistent part of patient care conversations.
She is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant, has previously worked as a GP, and has been involved in the development of several Moving Medicine resources, as well as speaking nationally and internationally on the role of physical activity in long-term health conditions.
This newly established role has been made possible through a partnership between Energise Me and the Integrated Care Board, with supplementary funding from Public Health Hampshire.
The role is part of a wider network of Physical Activity Clinical Champions across the UK run by a consortium consisting of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine, the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Sheffield, and Intelligent Health. Over 40,000 healthcare professionals have already been trained across the country.
Physical activity is essential to health and wellbeing, yet many people do not receive the support they need to stay active. There is overwhelming evidence that the benefits of physical activity far outweigh any risks, for both adults and children and even for those with health conditions. Embedding physical activity into every aspect of life-long healthcare will benefit patients, NHS staff and the wider population.
Over a third of adults in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are not achieving recommended levels of physical activity for good health, and over 220,000 are doing less than 30 minutes of activity per week. People with long term conditions are twice as likely to be amongst the least active. Physical activity is incorporated across multiple NICE clinical guidelines, and health care professionals can make a big difference, with evidence suggesting 1 in 4 people would be more active if advised by a GP or nurse.
PACC training is available to all healthcare professionals including those in training. Attending provides the opportunity to:
