Active Home

As activity providers, teachers and community leaders, you’re perfectly placed to spark physical activity in children’s lives, especially while they’re at home.

By pointing families in the direction of resources that help children stay active at home, you can help them build active habits that support their health, confidence and mental wellbeing for years to come.

Guidelines for Daily Activity

Children and young people should aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity daily, according to the Chief Medical Officers.

That should split roughly into 30 minutes at school or in supervised settings, plus 30 minutes at home.

Remember: movement can be broken into small, achievable chunks! It doesn’t need to be one long block.

Why Staying Active Matters

Movement helps children release energy, reduce stress, and improve focus. Making daily life at home a little easier for everyone. It also encourages creativity, builds confidence, and gives children a sense of achievement.

What You Can Do

Depending on your role, there are a few powerful ways to support:

For Schools and Teachers:

  • Active homework ideas to link learning and movement (e.g. count steps to solve a math problem, walk and write about local nature).
  • Promote Active Home messaging through newsletters and school websites. Remind parents about the importance of moving and inspiration for what they can do at home.

For Activity Providers and Youth Workers:

  • Share or link to free resources that families can try at home (see list in the section below).
  • Host family‑play workshops or mini-sessions that parents can replicate at home, boosting fun and parent involvement.

For Everyone:

  • Use social media, email lists, or community networks to send fun challenges or daily movement ideas.
  • Include signposts to reliable resources. Make sure they’re practical and easy to follow.

We recognise that those children we can support at home do better at school.
