We’ve teamed up with 5 local health walk schemes to get more women walking walking for health.
Nationally and locally, women are less active than men. Sport England’s This Girl Can insight revealed that one of the biggest barriers stopping women from being active was fear of judgement. We want to help women feel confident about joining a walk near them.
Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walks. A Ramblers initiative, it helps people across the country to lead a more active lifestyle. There are health walk schemes all over Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The walks are short and run by friendly and well-trained volunteers who are passionate about supporting others to be active. They offer a safe and inclusive environment for anyone who is nervous about exercise.
Because we tend to walk at a slower pace... I think we make more friends. A lot of really good friendships have been made.
Charmian, Walk Leader
We’re working with Walk Coordinators across Hampshire to promote their walks through digital and offline channels. This includes providing a social media chat service where women can ask questions if they’re nervous about joining a walk.
Our aim is to ensure local women are aware of walks near them and that they have all the information they need to feel confident taking part. Through the project, we’re also building a more detailed picture of some of the local barriers that prevent women from being active.
