The Golden Mile
Working in partnership with Local GP Practices, Local NHS Clincial Groups, Hampshire School Nurses, School Games Organisers and Local Authorities, Energise Me launched the Golden Mile project across the county this Spring.
The Golden Mile is a safe, simple and measurable health & physical activity initiative accessible to all pupils regardless of age or ability.
As a school we have fully embraced the concept of the Golden Mile both staff and pupils alike. It has not been a burden in setting it up at all and the Sports Leaders have introduced it through an Assembly, and now monitor it. The children are independently choosing to walk or run some laps during their break and lunchtime to then record on their chart. Teachers will take the children outside during lessons to gain fresh air and have a period of activity which then aids the learning and focus when returning to class. We have seen a positive impact on children settling to their work with more focus as they have had a bit of exercise. Definitely a winner for us as a school in promoting well being! – Newchurch Primary School
Through the Golden Mile project we aim to increase the amount of time each day pupils from Hampshire & IOW are active in schools by walking, jogging or running around a measured distance (the Golden Mile Track) within the safety of the school grounds. By participating in the Golden Mile project schools will not only provide their pupils with greater access to physical activity but they will also see the wider gains of regular activity with improved health benefits, improved classroom behaviour and concentration levels, team work and leadership.
There will be no cost for Hampshire & IOW schools to sign up to the Golden Mile Project, we just ask that each school has a named coordinator who can attend a training session and be a champion in their school. The concept is simple but it is highly effective as any school and any pupil can take part.
Really enjoyable training, as a school it was great to see how it works and how easy it is to put into place – Bassett Green Primary School
Schools must attend a training session in order to access the Golden Mile for free.
There are many benefits that children gain from participating in the Golden Mile:
- Improved Fitness and Behaviour
- Team work
- Increased Concentration

Well done to Gurnard Primary School for winning the November/December Energise Me Golden Mile Challenge.
They walked, skipped, jogged and ran 1959 miles!
Pupils from Lanesend Primary School have achieved 150 miles from March last year. A huge achievement well done!
One of the pupils has this to say:
‘The Golden Mile is really good for your body. It is also good because people cheer you on. People also cheer when you get an achievement! I love the Golden Mile! It makes you fit and it is so much fun. I achieved 150 miles because I kept running and stuck at it with my friends. We all got 150.’
It’s not too late to sign up so if your school is interested please get in touch.
